I was standing in the checkout line at a crowded grocery store, balancing a toddler on one hip and a leaking carton of almond milk on the other, when I realized I’d completely forgotten to book my daughter’s 4:00 PM pediatrician appointment. I whispered to the phone in my pocket, "Book Dr. Smith for four today."
My phone blinked, thought for a second, and then pulled up a Google search for "Dr. Smith phone number." I had to put the milk down, pull out my phone, navigate a web portal, and type in a password I couldn’t remember—all while a line of impatient shoppers stared at the back of my head.
That was the moment I realized the AI "revolution" is currently stuck in the middle. We have plenty of chatbots that can write poems about avocados, but we have very few genuine agents—AI that can actually do things on our behalf.
With the holiday season fast approaching, I decided to see if any of the major players were actually ready to be the "gift of efficiency." I spent 24 hours putting six of the biggest AI agents through a gauntlet of real-world tasks to see which ones are worth your subscription dollars and which ones are just glorified search bars.
The Gauntlet: Four Tests, Six Competitors
I didn't want poetry. I wanted productivity. I tested Google Gemini Advanced, OpenAI’s ChatGPT (with Operator features), Anthropic’s Claude (Computer Use mode), Meta Muse, Microsoft Copilot Pro, and Perplexity Pro.
Each agent was graded on four specific tasks:
- Booking: Securing a hypothetical doctor’s appointment through a portal.
- Dining: Finding and booking a table for four at a specific type of restaurant.
- Shopping: Researching and comparing the best prices for a specific smart home hub.
- Planning: Mapping out a three-day weekend road trip with specific budget and scenic constraints.
The Agent Scorecard
Here is how they performed across the board, ranked from a high of A to a low of F.
Google Gemini Advanced Doctor Appointment: A Dinner Reservation: A Price Hunting: A Road Trip Planning: A Overall Rank: 1st
OpenAI ChatGPT (Operator) Doctor Appointment: B Dinner Reservation: A Price Hunting: B Road Trip Planning: B Overall Rank: 2nd
